TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) -- As authorities expect the usual rash of burglaries around the holidays, it could lead people to putting a new item on their Christmas list.

According to local security system companies more-and-more people are installing  security systems in their homes, but now surveillance is being used like never before.

We're used to seeing security cameras in places of business as a deterrent against shoplifting or robberies but now more than ever, residents are calling wanting the same service.

"Something that a security system does not offer, the reliability of knowing that it's going to help in evidence of catching a perpetrator," said David Hamilton, owner of Southern Security in Tupelo.

Hamilton said the fear of having an intruder come into what should be a person's most secure place scares people, especially if it has happened near them.

"We just recently got the cameras because our neighbor next door got broke into and they stayed in his house all day long" said Jason Kyle who lives in the Auburn Community of Lee County. "They rummaged through his stuff, walked out and they have never caught them."

He's just one of the many residents in the area that getting cameras installed in their home.

While they may be in different parts of the county, all of them share a common bond of living in a rural area.

"Just being outside of the city limits, your nearest neighbor is a good ways away. I mean they can't see everything that's going on at your house," Kyle added.

If you hear something outside your home and even though it may not be the most well-lit place, with surveillance cameras you don't have to go outside to see who's there.

"We're seeing a lot more cameras on the outside of the residence to protect vehicles, we had a lot of vehicle burglary," Hamilton said. "People have a lot of four-wheelers that's being stolen this time of year so we're getting a lot more calls on outside cameras."

"New technology continues to play a large role in the surveillance industry, which includes watching your home at your convenience when you're not there.

"As soon as someone enters into a residence it takes a picture and e-mails it to a homeowners phone, immediately," Hamilton said.

"With Christmas coming up you got people buying big, expensive presents you don't want your family to be without Christmas," Kyle added.
