BOONEVILLE, Miss. (WTVA) - Schools in four north Mississippi county are taking extra precautions following reports of a possible threat to a school.
Lee County Superintendent Jimmy Weeks says he was notified Monday morning about a threat of a shooting at a school in the Baldwyn/Booneville area and contacted law enforcement.
New Albany Superintentendent Jackie Ford says he placed the school on semi-lockdown and police are patrolling the schools in the district. He says the doors are locked at each school, but students inside are going through a normal class day.
Union County Superintendent Ken Basil says deputies walked through all the schools in his county.
Booneville School Superintendent Todd English says they were notified of an online threat Monday morning and police were notified.
Officers responded to schools, but they did not place any schools on lockdown.
Prentiss County Superintendent Randle Downs says principals at the all the schools were aware of the situation and Wheeler Principal Todd Swinney says he notified law enforcement. He says some parents were allowed to pick up their students at school.
Baldwyn School Superintendent Ronnie Hill says he called authorities after hearing of the threat Monday morning and went to each school. The schools are not on lockdown, but police are on each campus checking people who enter and leave campus.
A spokesperson with the Tupelo Public School District says school resource officers notified Tupelo police, who increased their patrols around the school.
Tishomingo County School Superintendent Ben McClung says they already have school resource officers, but did notify local law enforcement agencies to ask for additional patrols around the county schools.
