HOUSTON, Miss. (WTVA) — Residents of Chickasaw County had the opportunity to come out and receive free school supplies for the upcoming school year.

A wide variety of different supplies were given away at the annual Meet Me Under the Shade Tree event.
Several booths were set up for the residents to stop by and pick up the supplies they needed.

There was also some health items given away at the event as well.

The city of Houston is doing everything it can to make sure kids will be prepared for this upcoming school year.
"I got notebooks, crayons, markers, paper towels, kleenex and backpacks," said Teresa Murillo, Houston resident.

"This event is actually put on by my sister, Alderwoman Sheena Kirby Jones," added Barbara Buggs, co-organizer. "She had a vision that every child should begin school with at least pencil and paper."

The annual event is now four years in the running. It had to be moved to the Houston Fire Station in order to accommodate everyone.
