OXFORD, Miss. (WTVA) -- A Calhoun County volunteer fire department is receiving communications upgrades courtesy of an Oxford restaurant.
On Wednesday, Firehouse Subs donated 30 radios and 16 pagers to the Chickenbone VFD in northern Calhoun County.
Officials say the equipment will improve communication by replacing the devices currently used by firefighters that are no longer compatible to new technology.
The equipment is valued at $16,700 and was paid for through the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation.
The foundation is funding through donations, sales of empty pickle buckets used at the restaurant, and the "roundup" program that lets customers round up the cost of their meal to the next dollar amount with the extra going to the foundation.
Since its creation in 2005, the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation has given $5.7 million to first responders in 35 states and Puerto Rico.
