TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) - The plywood is coming off the windows and doors at the historic Spain House in Tupelo.

The house and lot are being readied for a "Raise The Roof Fundraiser" that takes place there Saturday afternoon.

This is an effort by the Tupelo Historic Preservation Society to restore this century-old house.

Society member Doyce Deas said, "Some old-fashioned picnic food, some good music and a tour of the house are all on tap. We're going to let them see the interior of the house in its present state. They can see what's ahead of us and what we have to do."

A new roof and rebuilt porches are first on the agenda for the society.

Forty thousand dollars is needed in order to apply for a $200,000 grant from the state to fund the project.

Inside and out the house needs work.

However, Tupelo Historic Preservation Society members continue to see this as a worthwhile project from both historical and economical standpoints.

Society member Rob Brandon said, "I live in this neighborhood just down the street. Seeing this building come in is a great thing for me. That's because it's going to help us continue to regentrify this area that we're living in."

In December of last year the house was moved from its previous location on Main Street to its new home on Church Street.

Once the roof is replaced and porches rebuilt, the floors and much of the other interior are in fairly good condition according to society members.

Deas said, "This home is one of the last remaining, really important structures in Tupelo. So much of our history has just been demolished for parking lots."

Now these supporters of the project say they're counting on residents to help give this house new life.

The "Raise The Roof Fundraiser" is Saturday on the grounds of the Spain House.

It's located at 510 South Church Street.

The event runs from 4:00 p-m to 7:00 p-m.

Tickets are $25 per person.
