Local mail processing could move to Memphis.
TUPELO, Miss.--(WTVA)--There will be minimal impact on the customer.

That's the promise of the U.S. Postal Service which is moving outgoing mail processing and distribution operations from Tupelo to Memphis.

By October first, Tupelo mail will be sorted, postmarked and delivered from Memphis.

Postal officials say a decline in mail volume in Tupelo lead to their decision.

Postal Service spokesperson Beth Barnett says customers should not anticipate delivery delays.

Area residents do have some concerns about the changes.

"It will be going further from Tupelo and that's going to make it slower getting to people," customer Johnny Ware said.

"Things will be running through Memphis so, yes, I think it will affect us in a lot of ways," customer Mildred Jones said.

"I write to my son every other day and I know that I can come by here and put it in the mailbox and know that he is going to get it the next day.  I feel like, if they move it to Memphis, that it will slow the mail down," customer Anna Clayton said.

"Well, I realize they have to cut costs but it is a convenience for us," customer Brenda Chaffin said.

Barnett says there will be very few instances of delays depending on the destination.

They expect delays to be less than one percent of total mail volume.
