PONTOTOC, Miss. (WTVA) - Friday at Pontotoc Middle School, students who did well on the statewide MCT2 tests last spring were honored with a celebration at their school.

More than 300 students at the school received certificates of achievement.

Principal Mitzi Moore said, "We're recognizing more than 300 students who scored either proficient or advanced in all areas of the MCT2. Our students worked so hard that our sixth grade scores in language arts and math rated third in the state. That's out of 149 school districts."

Teachers and many of the students' parents were on hand to join in.

Parent Wanda Knox said, "We encourage her a lot in her education. Books are first and sports is later."

Parent Jennifer Mansfield said, "How they perform on a test I think is very much a reflection on how our teachers care about our children in this system."

Organizers say being honored like this is a chance to show how proud the community is of their school.

It also serves as a motivator to do even more this school year.

Because of the emphasis on these state tests, students work all year long with students to prepare for them.

Principal Mitzi Moore said, "It's not just about the test but it's what our students are learning to benefit them in the future. We work all year long preparing for this test in the spring."

But on this day, it's a time to pause for just a bit and celebrate the young people's achievement.
