PONTOTOC, Miss. (WTVA) — On the 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour, Pontotoc County residents gathered to pay tribute to all those who risked their lives for our freedom.
"We love our veterans, and they've showed their true love for us," said Pontotoc Mayor Jeff Stafford.
The annual Pontotoc County Veterans Day event began with a parade as hundreds, including county students, packed Main Street to say thank you.
Involving county youth in the Veterans Day program is something Pontotoc officials say is important.
"None of them realize the impact the different wars have had on their lives and their families' lives, and the students learn by having these veterans that are living right here among us," said Ellen Russell, Pontotoc County Main Street Director.
Russell says close to 1,500 people gathered in downtown Pontotoc to honor Pontotoc County veterans.
"I know that the other veterans like me feel so proud to be here and know that our town supports us and that they are thankful for what we've done, and I'm thankful for every veteran here and those who couldn't come and those who have passed," says veteran Mac Huddleston.
