TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) -- It's prom season and the Tupelo Police Department wants to get the word out that underage drinking won't be tolerated.
Officers reminded Tupelo High School students that prom is a time to have fun and not a time to break the law.
It's the last year of high school for over 500 students at Tupelo Public Schools.
"I think if we get the word out there and to let the students know the dangers of alcohol use and the zero tolerance. We are not going to tolerate the use of alcohol by teenagers," said Tupelo Police Officer Allan Chavers.
Officers handed out fliers to students as a reminder of the consequences of underage drinking and driving.
Statistics show 8.6 percent of DUI arrests in Mississippi are of underage drinkers.
Senior Tamera Walker said she appreciates the reminder, but she doesn't need it.
"My plan is just to have fun-live life to the fullest without all this acting crazy and getting drunk and stuff like that. That's not what it's all about," said Walker.
It is illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to buy, possess or drink alcoholic beverages.
