TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) - People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, protested in downtown Tupelo Wednesday.

The protest consisted of a woman wearing painted tiger-stripes inside a cage, with a sign that read "Wild Animals Don't Belong Behind Bars." One of Petas campaign coordinators said she feels this is a cause that everyone should advocate.

No one wants to support animal cruelty. So when people find out that baby elephants are ripped away from their mothers, they're electrocuted with hot shots. They're gouged with bull hooks and wrestled to the ground by several adult men, which can be seen in our recent photos that were given to us from a Ringling employee, no on wants to support that." Amanda Fortino, a PETA Campaign Coordinator said.

This is not the first time PETA has organized a similar protest prior to a visit by the Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus in Tupelo. Circus officials deny any unethical treatment of its animals
