ABERDEEN, Miss. (WTVA) — Some people showed up at City Hall in Aberdeen Tuesday for a public meeting where they expressed opposition to changing the police chief's position from elected to appointed.

One person left the meeting with Mayor Cecil Belle unsatisfied and said the matter may end up in court.

"The citizens, they're gonna have to come together," said Lady Garth. "They're gonna have to understand this is your town.  No one can take it from you unless you lay down and do absolutely nothing about it."

"We have the right to vote.  And now, you tell me only three people can decide now to strip me of that right to vote," said Edward Haynes, Jr.

Aldermen voted 3-2 last month to change the city's charter where the police chief can be appointed.

That charter change must also get state and federal approval.
