WHEELER, Miss. (WTVA) - A late-night shooting ends with one man dead and another man held behind bars at the Prentiss County Detention Center.

Friday night's shooting in the town of Wheeler is raising several questions.

A gathering of people at a house on County Road 5121 in Wheeler turned deadly after one person was shot.

"When officers arrived, they found a young white male individual with a single gunshot wound to the chest," Prentiss County Sheriff Randy Tolar said.

As investigators are handling this case, one of the things they're looking at is the connection between the shooting victim and the person who may be responsible.

"They either knew each other or had grown to know each other over a period of time," adds Tolar. "It just wasn't a random incident. We really can't disclose the circumstances at this time, but once the charges -- if any -- are filed, I think that might explain some of the circumstances."

For people who call Wheeler their home, they say this is very uncharacteristic for a town of this size.

"This is a quiet neighborhood," adds Mitchell Kennedy, Wheeler resident. "Everybody knows everybody and it's just hit home, too close to home. I don't like this happening here close by because everybody knows everybody."

The person of interest, whose name has not been released, was actually talked into turning himself in by a family member after fleeing the scene.

"[A family member] talked to him and [he] turned himself in; when he did that, then the officers placed him into custody for questioning," adds Tolar. "[We're holding him] basically for questioning at this time and concerning the shooting incident itself."

The sheriff adds that charges are pending at this point.

Neither the person of interest nor the shooting victim's name has been released by authorities.
