(WTVA) — The dean of education at Ole Miss says more than 75 people have applied for acceptance into a new program aimed at recruiting top students to become teachers.
"We've got a student coming from Florida right now just to visit the campus with his parents next week," said Dr. David Rock. "We've got students from Massachusetts, Florida, Alabama -- as far as a thousand miles away."
Those students are competing for one of 40 slots in the Mississippi Excellence in Teaching Program.
It's a collaborative effort between Mississippi State University and the University of Mississippi to offer full scholarships to students in exchange for a commitment to teach English or math in Mississippi for five years.
Rock said the process to review applications started on March 15 and the first calls are going out now to candidates who have been accepted.
He added applications are still being accepted.
