VERONA, Miss. (WTVA)--Wednesday night, Lee County residents had an opportunity to view new flood maps.
The Mississippi Flood Map Modernization Initiative Team hosted an open house at the MSU Extension Office in Verona.
Organizers say this is a critical time for the public to find out if their property is in a flood zone.
If so, it will affect you insurance rates, but you can appeal if you disagree with the maps.
"There have some subdivisions that have said no i don't think we're in a flood zone or high risk area. So, they provided proper documentation and presented it to the Department of Environmental Quality who sent it to FEMA. FEMA agreed and actually changed the maps," said MEMA spokesman Greg Flynn.
The Department of Environmental Quality worked on the maps for four years.
