TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) -- It's a bouncing baby boy for one Shannon couple.

Welcome to the world Alexander Bruce Minor.

The 7 pound, 10 ounce newborn arrived shortly after midnight.

He is the first baby to be born at the North Mississippi Medical Center's Women's Hospital for the year 2013.

"I had absolutely no clue that it was gonna be the first baby of the year and didn't think it would be on January first. I thought it would be somewhere closer to his due date the tenth."

Kaufman says she came to the hospital late Monday because she was having contractions.

She would deliver baby Alexander in less than an hour after being taken to the labor room.

She believes her son will always enjoy his proud entry into this world.

"He's probably going to rub it in everybody else's faces-first baby of the year. He's special to me no matter when he was born, but I really think it is unique," Kaufman said.
The phone continues to ring from well wishers.

"It's just a blessing to me to come in to see the first one of the new year. It's my second grandchild and I know I will love him as much as I do my first one. It's exciting and even more special to be first one in the new year. Everybody is calling and checking. The whole family is excited about it," Melvin Minor said.

"I hope everybody gets what they hope to accomplish this year," Bruce Minor said.

When they leave the hospital, they will be taking with them a huge gift basket.

Numerous businesses donated everything from baby necessities to restaurant gift cards.
