NEW ALBANY, Miss. (WTVA)-- Boy Scouts participated in the first annual Merit Badge Day in New Albany Saturday.

By earning badges, the scouts will advance higher in their rankings within the organization.

"The museum here in New Albany is a very historical place," said John Ford of Troop 222 in New Albany. "We have a wonderful exhibit room here. And also traveling exhibits and we also have a pioneer village set up. And so, it offers a wide variety of places to host merit badges. And also a wide variety of information here to go along with the merit badges."

He says earning merit badges has been a part of scouting since its inception.
