MABEN, Miss. (WTVA) -- The mayor of Maben says the town's residents do not need to be concerned about fire protection following the resignation of the fire chief Tuesday evening.

Justin Collins submitted his resignation during an emergency meeting for the Maben Volunteer Fire Department.

Mayor Larry Pruitt says other members also resigned from the department, but says the remaining members and reserves will make sure the town continues to have fire protection.

He also says surrounding volunteer departments will be available to provide mutual aid in the event they are needed.

Pruitt says the department is stronger that it has been in recent months.

The department receives funding from Oktibbeha County but is overseen by the city.

The mayor says the volunteers oversee the election of the chief.

He says the members of the department have selected someone to serve at the interim chief.
