BELMONT, Miss. (WTVA) -- A man serving a life sentence in prison for the shooting death of a Belmont police officer in 1977 has died.

Mississippi Department of Corrections officials confirm Marion Stanley Osborne, 58, died of natural causes Tuesday at the Mississippi State Penitentiary in Parchman.

Osborne was charged in the shooting death of Mickey Johnson, 20, on December 1, 1977.  He was convicted of capital murder and sentenced on April 14, 1978.

MDOC says Osborne was due for a Parole Board review in February.

Authorities say Osborne overpowered Johnson and used the officer's firearm to shoot him during an arrest attempt.

Johnson had served with the department for two years.

Highway 25 in Tishomingo County has been designated the Mickey Johnson Memorial Highway.
