STARKVILLE, Miss. (WTVA) -- Starkville police are asking the public for help in locating the driver of a vehicle involved in a hit-and-run traffic accident Sunday night.
Investigators say officers were called to Garrard Road near Highway 25 on a report of a man who had been hit by a vehicle.
When they arrived, they found a man lying on the side of the road next to an SUV.
The man told authorities he had run out of gas and the vehicle was sitting in the right-hand lane of the roadway.
Authorities say he was attempting to pour some in the tank when he heard a car approaching.
He says he used a flashlight to try and warn the driver.
They say the other car moved into the left-hand lane, but the vehicle hit the man's leg and the driver's side of the SUV causing significant damage..
Investigators say the lights were not on on the SUV and it was dark in the area.
The man was taken by ambulance to the Oktibbeha County Regional Medical Center where he is scheduled to undergo surgery to repair a broken leg.
