JACKSON, Miss. (WTVA) -- State troopers are busy across north and central Mississippi responding to traffic accidents as a result of winter weather.

MHP officials in Starkville says there is a report of one fatality on Highway 50 in Lowndes County.

Coroner Greg Merchant tells WTVA.com Johnnie Matthews, 64, of Clay County died in the accident near the Tennessee Tombigbee Waterway Bridge around 5 a.m. Thursday.

Merchant says Matthews was driving on Highway 50 when his truck hit the tree, crushing the roof.

The truck rolled off the highway and hit a tree.

Matthews was wearing a seatbelt.

Highway 12 east of Ackerman was also shutdown after 18-wheelers were unable to climb a hill near the city because of ice on the roadway.

Crews are working to get traffic moving again.

MHP officials also report some problems on Highway 78 near the Lee/Itawamba County line.
