TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA)--Employees of the Mississippi Department of Transportation are happy to be in a new facility in Tupelo.
The new headquarters has two floors and 30,000 square feet.
About 40 employees moved out of the old building, next door to the new structure, about two weeks ago.
They work in various departments-design, construction, maintenance, engineering, and purchasing. The new building also has a spacious auditorium and elevator.
The cost of the project was $5 million, but it was definitely needed, according to one engineer.
"Of course the other one was opened in 1959. It pretty much was used up. It was not handicap accessible," said Bill Jamieson, MDOT district engineer.
The old building had crumbling walls and leaking ceilings in several offices.
Demolition of the old building begins Monday and should be completed by June. The available space will be used for parking.
