LOUISVILLE, Miss. (WTVA) -- A Louisville firefighter has received a statewide honor for his work as a safety educator.

Detrick Sanders was recently awarded the Chief Gary Kistler Life Safety Award for 2013 by the Mississippi Association of Professional Fire & Life Safety Educators.

Sanders has worked with the Louisville Fire Department since 2007 and has served in the role of Fire & Life Safety Educator in 2011.

Mayor Will Hill says Sanders has worked to develop the Fire Academy for Kids, installing smoke detectors in the community and car safety seat checks.

Sanders was presented the award during a recent meeting of the Louisville Board of Aldermen.
