TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) -- The Tupelo Public School District is holding Orientation Celebrations during the month of February in an effort to showcase exciting new opportunities.
Parent-teacher organiziations and staff have been busy gearing up for families to come and visit their child's school.
Orientation Celebration is an opportunity for new students who will be entering the third grade at Lawndale Elementary in August a chance to experience "A Day in the Life" as a student.
"It's just a way for us to celebrate the sucess we've had here and give our upcoming students who haven't had a chance to visit," said Principal Brock English. "Especially our incoming third graders for next year a chance to see what's going on in each classroom."
Schools offering pre-k through the sixth grade are holding orientations sooner than later to help ensure all students, especially those entering a new school, are prepared for what lies ahead.
"First day of school, especially for third graders, is a very scary process for them. So, it's nice to have them go ahead and have them come into the school and get to walk around it and see where they're going to be and what classroom they're going to be in," said teacher Janet Tubb.
Organizers say holding orientation in the middle of the school year will allow more students and parents to attend, because more people are on vacation during the summer months.
"It gives them the opportunity to do it throughout the school year and during the school year to make sure everyone can attend. Hopefully it doesn't interfere with any other activities they have going on," Tubb added.
"Third grade is like the whole new year. You learn multipication, division and none of it is review from second grade," explained Lawndale student Grace Chandler.
Information about curriculum and instruction, along with fun-filled family activities, will highlight each orientation celebration.
The first school to hold an orientation celebration is Milam Tuesday night from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. for next year's sixth graders.
Lawndale Elementary's orientation will be held February 26th.
