ABERDEEN, Miss. (WTVA)-- According to Sheriff Cecil Cantrell, the Monroe County Detention Center is holding 15 inmates on federal charges.

The sheriff says it makes for good dollars and cents.

"It pays $40 dollars a day, plus .58 cents a mile if we have to take them to the court or to anything. And, also they help us on our guards which they pay us $18.50 an hour to our guards to guard those inmates. It's going to be a good thing for the county. It's going to generate quite a bit of money for the county," said Sheriff Cantrell.

Cantrell says the jail had to meet federal standards to hold the inmates.

He adds that the money generated from holding the federal inmates will generate nearly $18,000 a month for the county.
