NEW ALBANY, Miss. (WTVA) -- How many sidewalks can $100,000 buy?
New Albany officials are hoping to use Safe Routes to School grant money to build sidewalks where needed.
There are a number of streets that may have sidewalks on one side and none on the other.
City officials said streets near New Albany Central Middle School are especially problematic.
They are in the process of compiling data related to the number of student-related accidents.
Mayor Tim Kent said there have been multiple school bus accidents.
"Right now, we just don't have a real safe route for kids to leave the school and stay on the sidewalk without crossing the street," Mayor Kent said.
"I think that it would be a lot better for the children if we had sidewalks that they could walk on and not have to walk into the street," resident Tammy Miller said.
Officials said they hope grant money will also pay for flashing signs and improved crosswalks.
