BALDWYN, Miss. (WTVA) - For residents of Baldwyn, Saturday night is a night to remember as the annual "National Night Out" Back to School Bash kicked off late Saturday evening.
Every year, families meet at the parking lot of the Mt. Nebo Christian Methodist Episcopal Church to ring in the start of a new school year.
Local town leaders and members of law enforcement also get together to celebrate the new year with the general public.
The annual event draws in hundreds of people, which is why organizers have a number of activities for the kids.
"We have the police department here, the sheriff department here. Other school administrators are here to share with us," Pastor Johnathan Banks said. "We also have the city officials here as well to share with the community."
"This is for the children," said volunteer Anna Thomas. "They need to be recognized because they're our future and they will receive backpacks, school supplies and fun activities."
Various gospel groups performed on stage to get everyone in the mood for the first day of school.
