TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) -- Lee County supervisors have approved an increase in the garbage fees during a meeting Monday morning.

Supervisors have given their approval to a plan to raise residential rates to $12.50 per month.

The current residential rate is $9 per month.

Commercial customers would see their rates increase by 10 percent.

Supervisor Phil Morgan opposed the increase from the beginning and was the only one who voted against it Monday morning.

The board asked for the increase to help cover increased costs of operating the system.

Morgan also says the county is owed over $1 million in deliquent garbage fees.

The increase goes into effect immediately.
