TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) -- Wednesday was a day to remember for three members of the Lee County Sheriff's Department Junior Deputy Academy.

Academy participants experienced hands on instruction and useage of firearms.

Participants were able to aim and fire a handgun and shotgun at targets set up at the North Mississippi Law Enforcement Training Academy in Tupelo.
It was the first time some academy members operated a weapon with live ammunition.

"It's kind of comforting to know that there is a trained officer letting you know when to fire and when not too. Teaching you how to fire at the right time and fire accurately," said Alex Reddick, participant.

The week long junior academy runs through Friday and ends with a graduation party.
