AMORY, Miss. (WTVA) — New playground equipment is being added to an area of Amory that attracts large crowds during the spring, summer and fall.
That area is in the middle of the Gilmore SportsPlex. It's commonly referred to as the Pea Patch.
"It's ADA-compatible equipment," said Jamie Morgan, the city of Amory's deputy clerk. "There is a large piece on it called the Omni Spin, and it is a great piece of equipment for every kid no matter what their disability is to have fun and enjoy it."
Before city crews can come in and work on the foundation and stake out the property, there are five trees that need to be removed for safety reasons and for necessity.
"Once those trees are gone, we'll get dirt work in," added Morgan. "We'll section it off. We'll have the equipment ordered, and then when time gets closer, we'll do the pre-work, which is the concrete and all the footings."
To make sure everything is ready for the public, the city is in the process of organizing a Community Build Day where people can pitch in to get the playground equipment and grounds in good shape.
"We would like to have the Community Build Day Saturday in late April," said Morgan. "[This way], it's completed and ready for the end of school...."
With a crew of volunteers helping, kids of all ages and abilities will have full access to the playground equipment.
Funding for the project is being provided by a $15,000 grant from the national non-profit KaBOOM!. An equal match was made by the city of Amory.
