CLEVELAND, Miss. (AP) -- A group promoting the heritage of the Mississippi Delta wants to build a 25-foot-tall cotton picker statue on U.S. 61 in Bolivar County.

Khafre Inc., a nonprofit group based in Indianola, wants the monument to be part of a sharecroppers interpretive center.

C. Sade Turpinseed, the executive director of Khafre, told the Bolivar Commercial his group wants to build the complex on 20 acres it has secured in Mound Bayou. Turpinseed said the group hopes to begin construction within the
next year.

He said exhibits would highlight cotton processing, sharecropping, black farming, cotton pickers, slavery and blues music.

The Bolivar County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution last week supporting the project.
