MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WTVA) -- The state of Alabama is providing money to help low-income and elderly residents reduce their utility bills by making their homes more energy efficient.

Governor Robert Bentley announced Thursday $2.8 million would be provided to the Alabama Weatherization Assistance Program.

Homes that qualify for assistance are modified to improve both energy efficiency and safety.

An audit will be done to determine ways to lower utility bills.

The program will be administered by 16 community agencies across the state.
