MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WTVA) -- Hundreds of resident in seven Alabama communities will soon have a safe place in wait out severe weather.
The Appalachian Regional Commission has awarded three grants to totaling $89,340 to build safe rooms and shelters.
The town of Hackleburg will receive $22,973 to build a safe room to provide shelter for 96 people.
Triana, Alabama will get $50,000 to build a safe room to accomodate 240 people.
The remaining funding will go to Winston County to purchase five prefabricated safe rooms capale of holding 48 people.
Those will be located in Natural Bridge, Helicon, Houston, Moreland, and Nesmith.

Gov. Robert Bentley says each safe room will be designed to withstand tornado-force winds and will be built to comply with American Disability Act standards.
