TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) — Former Tupelo Mayor and Councilman Paul Eason has passed away.

Family members say Eason died after 12 p.m. Monday in Jackson.  His son, Brooks Eason, says his father died peacefully.

Paul Eason briefly served as mayor from November 1999 to January 2000 between Glenn McCullough's appointment to the Tennessee Valley Authority board and the special election of Larry Otis as mayor.

He was elected councilman-at-large in 1989 along with Carolyn Mauldin, who described him as the "kind of person that loved Tupelo."

Eason served on the City Council until 2001.  His neighbor, Mike Armour, says Eason was involved with the Boy Scouts for 59 years.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.  They're being handled by W.E. Pegues Funeral Directors in Tupelo.
