AUSTIN, Tex. (WTVA) -- Officials with the University of Texas announced Wednesday morning the death of legendary football coach Darrell Royal.

Royal, 88, coached the Longhorns to two national championships during two decades of leading the program.

He began his head coaching career at Mississippi State, where he guided the Bulldogs to winning seasons in 1954 and 1955.

Royal also was head coach at the University of Washington in 1956, before taking the job at Texas.

The team won national titles in 1963 and 1969 and shared the title in 1970.

UT officials say Royal suffered from Alzheimer's disease.

No details about the cause of death were released.
