BOONEVILLE, Miss. (WTVA) -- People who knew or were touched by a former Mississippi sportscaster paid tribute to him Saturday in Booneville.

"Remembering Rube" for the late Michael Rubenstein was held Saturday afternoon at the George E. Allen Library.

The Booneville native was the founder and executive director of Mississippi's Sports Hall of Fame.

Commonly referred to as "Rube" by his friends and colleagues, he left behind a legacy before dying in December 2011.

The event gave people a chance to reflect and share thoughts about someone who cared with a deep passion about sports and his home state.

"This is sort of an opportunity to share with his Booneville family and friends here," says Malcolm White, organizer. "[We share the] memories for the class of 1969, of his life, funny stories. [We] talk about his accomplishments and what a great friend he was to his community, to our state and to each of us individually."

Rubenstein succumbed to a long battle with kidney disease at the age of 60.

He is survived by a brother.
