OXFORD, Miss. (WTVA) --A former Mississippi Highway Patrol trooper is headed to federal prison for depriving a woman of her civil rights during an arrest in 2007.

Christopher Gary Hughes, 42, was sentenced to 33 months in prison and two years supervised probation.

Hughes pleaded guilty in February to assaulting a woman in October of 2007 while she was in the booking area of the Lee County Adult Detention Center.

The indictment claims he threw the woman on a concrete floor, stomped and kicked her.

Hughes pleaded guilty to one count of deprivation of rights under the color of law.

He will remain free on bond until he reports to prison next month.
