OXFORD, Miss. (WTVA) -- A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit filed by a former West Point police chief against the city because a settlement has been reached.

Steve Bingham claimed in the federal lawsuit he was fired in 2009 because members of the board of selectmen wanted an African-American to hold the position.

Board members claimed they had reason and the authority to remove Bingham as chief.

Bingham was asking for back pay and other damages.

The terms of the settlement were not included in the court documents.
