OXFORD, Miss. (WTVA) -- A former Mississippi State Trooper has pleaded guilty to charges filed in the assault of a woman at the Lee County Adult Detention Center.

Christopher Gary Hughes, 41, of Tupelo entered a guilty plea Monday in U. S. District Court in Oxford to one count of depravation of rights under color of law.

Hughes was accused of assaulting Carol Wampler-Green in the booking area of the jail in October of 2007.

The indictment says he threw the woman against the concrete floor, stomped and kicked her.

Hughes was in uniform at the time of the assault.

The charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and up to a $250,000 fine.

Hughes will be sentenced at a later date.
