VICKSBURG, Miss. (AP) -- Michael Pembleton, the former mayor of Sunflower, has been sentenced to three years' probation for stealing designer purses from Dillard's at the Vicksburg Mall.

The Vicksburg Post reports Pembleton pleaded guilty Friday before Circuit Judge M. James Chaney. Chaney also fined Pembleton $1,000.

Pembleton's trial had originally been set for Nov. 26.

Prosecutors say no restitution was required because all the property was recovered.

Pembleton was arrested March 13 at the store while he was loading 23 designer purses into the back of his vehicle. Prosecutors say the purses were worth about $7,100.

At the time of his arrest, Pembleton was working as an assistant manager at Dillard's.

Pembleton resigned as mayor in October.
