PEARL, Miss. (WTVA) — The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency says a mandatory evacuation was lifted Sunday for an area near a train derailment in Perry County that forced about 50 people out of their homes.
The derailment happened Friday near New Augusta, and some of the rail cars were leaking crude oil, liquid fertilizer and methanol.
A mandatory evacuation was ordered for areas north of Highway 98 until the tanker carrying methanol could be secured.
A shelter was opened for evacuees, but it was closed Saturday since people went to stay in other places.
