PONTOTOC, Miss. (WTVA) -- A Pontotoc County sheriff's deputy involved in a Saturday shooting on Beale Street is expected to file charges against three individuals.
Pontotoc Sheriff Leo Mask says the deputy, who is not being named, was off-duty when he witnessed a woman being fondled and confronted the man who committed the act.
Mask says the deputy was hit from behind during the confrontation, blacked out and woke up to see the man and two others walking off. As the deputy started to pick himself up, all three individuals started approaching him again.
At that point, Mask says the deputy pulled a .380 caliber handgun he had concealed in a holster on his ankle and fired multiple shots.
One of the men was injured and taken to a local hospital.
The deputy is now on paid leave as the investigation continues.
Mask says it is standard procedure to put a deputy on paid leave in this type of situation.
