JACKSON, Miss. (AP) -- The state House in the next few days could debate spending public money to send Mississippi students to private schools.
But prospects for passage of legislation remain murky in the Senate, where leaders haven't shown clear support.
The House Education Committee has passed two bills that could pay to send students to private schools. The first, called Opportunity Scholarships, was proposed by Republican Gov. Phil Bryant. The second would provide vouchers for the state's 60,000-plus special education students to attend private schools.
House Education Committee Chairman John Moore, R-Brandon, predicted some black Democrats would support Bryant's plan. GOP leaders have tried to court the group on these issues.
The Senate Education Committee didn't pass any of the private tuition proposals. That could indicate Senate leaders don't support the plans.
