OKOLONA, Miss. (WTVA) - Firefighters have been on the scene of an afternoon fire at United Furniture Company.

A security guard noticed smoke coming from the roof of the building around 5 p.m. Monday.

Multiple agencies responded to the fire and worked to put out the flames on bales of fiber in the main area of the plant.

In all, five or more bales were on fire. They're each described as being as big as two bales of cotton.

Chickasaw County Fire Coordinator Jonathan Blakenship said the fire took about an hour and a half to extinguish.

Damage is limited to the contents of that building, which includes sofas and love seats.

Blankenship said the sprinkler system functioned properly and helped prevent the spread of the fire.

Fire crews from Okolona, Sherman, Houston, Van Vleet, Southeast Chickasaw, Prairie, Cedar Creek, South Lee, Shannon, Wren and Amory responded.

Work will resume at normal time Tuesday.
