COLUMBUS, Miss. (WTVA) - Some of the young people at Palmer Home for Children in Columbus are home-schooled here on campus.

They're doing so in part with a recent donation of a new smart board and eight computers.

Grace McNally with Palmer Home said, "They use the computer for research, citations and things like that. It's been a really great resource."

The company Severstal made the donation.

Palmer Home officials say it's helped in learning for not only the home-schoolers but also those who attend local schools.

They too use the computer lab for after school work.

Twyla Summerford with Palmer Home said, "In today's world everything is fast paced. The kids want it fast paced and to keep going with it."

The home's leader says support like this makes their mission possible.

President and CEO of Palmer Home Drake Bassett said, "The value of this community is we have resources in terms of the public school system and great private schools. The opportunity for us here is to focus on several children who do better in this particular environment. They've shown great progress."

Along with their facilities in Columbus, Palmer Home also has a branch in Hernando. They hope to expand it soon.

There are currently 52 young people at Palmer Home in Columbus of all ages from Mississippi and surrounding states.

Twenty-six children are at the Hernando facility.

McNally said, "It's fun to be able to highlight their strengths and help them with their weaknesses. We get to see them grow in that."

With donations like this, Palmer Home officials say they're able to continue to provide the best life possible for all children who come here.

Palmer Home looks for other support from the community as well including spiritual.

This Sunday is Orphan Sunday and the kick off of Palmer Home's 30 Days of Prayer.
