TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WTVA) -- Just days after announcing it would keep plants in Columbus and Fayette, Alabama open, American Power Source has announced it will lay off a total of 50 workers at the plants.
In a statement, company officials say the layoffs are due to a decision to move production of U. S. Air Force Physical Fitness uniforms from American Power Source to Federal Prison Industries.
FPI is a government owned entity that uses federal prison facilities to manufacture apparel for federal agencies.
The company has also issed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification that says the plants will close on October 27, 2012.
The owner of American Power Source, Roxanne Ferriero, told WTVA.com last week she intends to keep the plants in operation and is currently seeking new business to keep the remaining workers at each plant on the job.
The company has been manufacturing apparel in Fayette since 2001 and in Columbus since 2003.
