COLUMBUS, Miss. (WTVA) -- The Columbus Air Force Base has selected a new commander.

Col. John Nichols will serve as the commander of the 14th Flying Training Wing in place of Col. Jim Sears, who has held the position for two years.

Sears will pass command to Nichols in a formal change-of-command ceremony on July 11.

Nichols, a senior pilot with more than 2,000 flight hours, is coming to the 14th Flying Training Wing from a deployed location where he was the Operations Group Commander.

Sears will be assigned to the Air Force Personnel Center at Randolph Air Force Base in Texas as the Chief of Officer Assignments.
