TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) - Once a year, an organization holds a conference designed to help teenage girls be more safe.
The conference, Teen Success Skills Class, is held to encourage women to reach their full potential and to also address the challenges women face.

Each is split up into eight different workshops and teaches the teens how to become more aware of their surrounding.

The conference brought in a marshall arts instructior to demonstrate different techniques the teens can use for defending themselves.

Self awareness and safety were the big issues at hand.

"Yes, [there are] different situations that could occur in this day and time," adds Melissa James, board president of Teen Success Skills Class. "It's just reaching out to them, kind of giving them an idea of where to go what to do."

This marked the first time for the event to be held at City Hall.
