STARKVILLE, Miss. (WTVA) -- With the help of a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the city of Starkville will soon be able to install new emergency sirens at five locations.

The grant for $96,613 and a five percent match by the city will cover the cost of purchasing and replacing sirens for the city's early warning siren project.

Some of the current sirens have been malfunctioning over recent years.

"We've had issues with sirens that were not responsive, and were not giving us good information back," said Lynn Spruill, the chief administrative officer for the city. "They sometimes make a noise but don't let us know about their functionality, and this will give us totally updated new technical sirens that will give us information going and coming."

Work on installing the new sirens should start within a month.
