OXFORD, Miss. (WTVA) - The city of Oxford celebrates a special milestone.

Oxford is 175 years old and to help commemorate the special day there were a number of activities planned.

One being 'Summer Fest.'

People celebrated in grand style with a number of activities planned all designed to help people of different ages enjoy the special occasion.

"We were very excited to get up this morning and see the petting zoo and to see everybody and the sidewalk sale," said Leah Tippit, Oxford resident. "We were really excited. We didn't go to bed till 10:30 last night because we were so excited."

The sidewalk sale kicked off the day as one of many activities

Each activity requires volunteers to man and operate.

"It is so worth coming in and spending a day like today," adds Gabriela Horstmann, volunteer. "Just helping out and seeing everyone celebrating in this beautiful town with all this history the beautiful shops and beautiful atmosphere."

The different organizations that are putting on the 175th birthday for Oxford selected The Square for this event because it's a high traffic area.

"The Square is a very special place," adds Mark Huelse, co-president of Downtown Council. "It's one of the gems of the south. We have restaurants and shops and bookstores, ice cream shops apparel stores design stores just a little bit for everybody."

For those who chose to stay home and skip out on the birthday bash, those who celebrated say it was a day to remember.

"They're missing out on just being able to hang out in Oxford," adds Liz Thompson, volunteer. "Seeing all the kids have fun and all the stores doing sidewalk sales so they're missing out on fun and petting zoo and sales."

"I would say that you're missing a beautiful day in Oxford," added Elizabeth Musser, volunteer. "[Especially] with lots of good quality family time and representing your community."

"If you sat on the couch and missed out on this I'm really sorry, but you missed out on a great day," added Horstmann.

Don't worry there are more birthday festivities planned for later this week.

The birthday bash is not the only event taking place in Oxford on Wednesday party goers will be in the Grove all day celebrating the 175th anniversary.
