JACKSON, Miss. (AP) -- House and Senate leaders again plan attempts in 2013 to expand Mississippi's charter school law.
They would allow new charter schools in addition to the takeover of existing schools. They also would create a new board to approve applications, oversee schools and shut down those that fail.
The state Board of Education wants to oversee charter schools, but proponents say new schools need a boss that won't be biased in favor of the existing system.
Another clash is over allowing online and for-profit schools. Some groups oppose virtual schools, citing poor track records.
The biggest conflict is whether local districts should be able to block charter schools. Leaders would allow A-rated and B-rated districts to block charters from being set up. What's unclear is if C-rated districts would get the same power.
